About GearBunnyX (and it's author)

(Last Updated : 4/25/2010)

What is GearBunny? And what's this GearBunnyX?

GearBunny is a template building utility for the online computer game, Dark Age of Camelot. It also features a built in spec calculator, a salvage calculator, and other features. I have been working on this for a little over four years now, and hence GearBunnyX is the 10th (X) major revision. Since it is very different from all the older versions, I decided to have it set itself up as a seperate application so that those who chose to continue using the older versions (Hereafter referred to as 'Classic') would not have any issues running both at the same time. Similar programs for those interested in trying out the others are Kort's and Loki. Each of these programs has different feature sets and interfaces, but I believe all have the goal of making it easy to set up your Camelot characters as possible.

System Requirements : This application is written with Turbo Delphi 2006 for Windows 98 and later operating systems. Any computer that can run or emulate Windows 98 or better should be able to run this application. The system requirements are not too high, though a better computer does have benefits in the speed department. From my experience and testing, I assume the following bare minimum requirements :

  • Windows 98 or Better (Or a program that simulates or emulates it such as WINE)
  • At least 32 Megs of Ram for each instance of GearBunnyX or Classic
  • 1024x768 is the minimum, higher is recommended
  • At least 6-10 megabytes of free hard disk space.
  • These requirements will change from time to time, as the program becomes more and more complex.
  • An internet connection is optional, but is helpful for automatic updating purposes.
The faster your computer, the faster it will be able to build and search through the item vault. With the item vault database system implemented in 1.94a, and the memory loading of all vault information in 1.96b7, speeds have improved immensely. The new dynamic vault system introduced in 1.99 requires slightly more time to process at startup, but allows for easier vault updates in the future, and transparent format changes.

Alright, now for the normal disclaimers/license, so here it is:

License : All software on my site is provided AS IS as donateware. Donations do not have to be in real world currency, they can be items or their stats, plat/gold in game, or feedback via one of my contact methods. I will keep working on this program as long as I know someone out there is getting some use out of it, because even if Mythic does shut down their servers I do expect that there will be fan-ran freeshards for a long time to come. For me, these programs are an opportunity to learn advanced programming concepts that I will use in future projects. While I do test extensively both in house and through my beta testers, I cannot guarantee that this software will run in all environments and systems. As per usual license rules, I am not responsible for any damage done due to use or misuse of my programs. My rule of thumb with programming is to leave the Windows things to Windows and not look at any data that is not part of my programs unless absolutely neccesary.

Bug Handling : I test all my program changes thoroughly before I release them, looking for both obvious and obscure bugs, and correct them as quickly as possible when they are brought to my attention by users or when I notice them. This doesn't mean that some bugs are not still hidden in there, and that is why I have provided several ways of contacting me. Any bugs/item problems will be corrected as quickly as possible, I will assure you.

Contacting me :
  • GearBunny's forums via screen name : KristoHasRisen
  • You can also email me directly as admin at gearbunny.com
  • I may also be reached via the VN Boards under the screen name StritonRz. (I post and read primarily the Gaheris and DaoC General Boards)
  • Yahoo or MSN Messenger : KrisBrown2k4 at yahoo.com. (Turn 'at's above into @'s)
I will also consider employment opportunities or working on programs for commission. Feel free to contact me about any projects you might need done.

Testing : I use 5 computers to test various configurations, the updating code, vista compatibility, and internet-less operation. I also have several volunteer testers who do testing, give me feedback, and item information.

Formulas : To the best of my knowledge, the formulas I use for stat caps, spellcrafting are correct. I play regularly and pay attention to what the game tells me though, so I know that some things are slightly or grossly different in game, and can change between versions and subpatches. I correct these discrepencies as soon as they are discovered or brought to my attention. I am aware of slight discrepencies in the bonus level formula, which I am attempting to figure out. These discrepencies only result in a one level difference in most cases, and in general appear related to +hit points and dragon's revenge items. I can manually set bonus level if necessary if an item is wildly different.

Note on Item stats : Please check the stats of the items you use in your templates for accuracy. I do not always have complete up-to-date information on certain items, and in some cases I don't include or hide an item in the database because I know the item had been changed or I don't have complete information on it. I make constant database updates to try and correct these discrepencies, and I have implemented an automatic vault update system beginning with version 1.96.1.5 that will alert you to when there are database updates. Also, keep in mind that Mythic is always changing item stats and where things drop, and often does so without any mention of it, waiting instead for someone to discover it themselves. For this reason, I have put an manual item editor into GearBunny, so users can correct items, and request buttons so they can notify me of changes. Also in GearBunnyX 1.99, I have added the ability to the inline editor to copy any item in the entire vault to any slot as needed. This will bypass all the normal vault rules as needed, so if an item is not marked for your class/server and you know you can get it, feel free to copy it this way, and let me know about the discrepency.

GearBunny does not offer much compatibility with Kort's or Loki. I have the ability to import most XML item files from Kort's, so if you email or post them, I will add the items you request as soon as I can. I can also add items from Chat logs if you would like to send those to me. While I don't have the ability to import Loki-style templates, if you would like me to convert a Kort's or Loki template to GearBunny, just post the template to the GearBunny forum above with an email and I will convert it for you and send you the GearBunny Template file.

Special Thanks : I have always tried to add new suggestions as they come in. Many features of the program have come from ideas submitted by testers and users such as MPlode, RedH, Spy, Ribble, Trilogist, PasswordLloth, Los Ortiz, Nightdriver10 and Kalorian. Also, I have received item submittals from hundreds of individuals and would like to thank Ethinarg for their database being made free to the public, as it comprises roughly 3/5ths of the current master vault file. I would also like to thank Allakhazam for allowing me to add search capabilities to the program for rapidly looking up items in their extensive database.

Donations : If you want to donate anything, daoc items, templates, gold/plat, real money, etc, you can email me at admin@gearbunny.com to make arrangements, or you can use the PayPal link. Thanks to everyone who has donated and submitted things so far. It is your interest in this project that keeps my site going.

Last request : Truly the only thing I can really request if you use this program regularly is that you tell your friends and spellcrafter where you found this program. You are allowed to redistribute the application as long as you make no modifications to the executable or include anything that doesn't belong with GearBunny. (IE: You can include my other programs and item files you've made with it) Have a great day, and thank you for reading all this.
